To coin two major corporations slogans and combine them works ideally for me as my race mantra. So many times we as athletes get caught up obsessing about time's, places and splits that we forget why we compete in the first place... hopefully because we love it !

Personally my most enjoyable times competing have come when I am free from the restraints we place on ourselves. Flying down a single track with a fellow competitor breathing down my neck, you push harder and who cares. You are going fast and loving it. Go with those feelings and race as hard as you possibly can. Sure there is a small amount of measure that comes with this, but dont become so obsessed by it that you forget about enjoying your race. Hopefully you are enjoying the outdoors, the elements and your fellow competitors. So the next time you catch yourself obsessing about your last split, laugh at yourself, look around you and smell the roses. Smile!
To really enjoy your race you should prepare properly. Be meticulous about training whilst enjoying it at the same time. Don't stress out if you miss a training session. It's not the end of the world, more importantly when you are tired, drained or just stressed out from life ask yourself, are you going to really benefit from doing the session ? I always ask myself a few questions if things are hectic, " will I add to my fitness account or withdraw from it by doing this session ? " It's that simple really. Go easy when you train, its not the race and pushing yourself constantly only leads to breakdown in the long run. I cant stress that enough, train smart so you can enjoy your race and smile doing it.

Just enjoy it... Stuart McConnachie
